Bullock's Tea Room, Los Angeles 1939

$25.00

Bullock’s Tea Room was the crown jewel of the luxury department store Bullock’s on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, an Art Deco masterpiece that opened in 1929. The famous tea room was on the fifth floor, with views of the Hollywood Hills, and catered light lunches and afternoon tea for society ladies and film stars such as Gloria Swanson, Mae West, Greta Garbo, Clarke Gable and John Wayne. Walt Disney was also a regular and Mickey Mouse, perhaps his most famous creation, features on this 1939 menu. On Tuesdays, there were special mid-day fashion lunches when models strolled around in day dresses and evening gowns, allowing ladies to nibble Monte Christo sandwiches and the tearoom’s famous coconut cream pie - said to be light as a cloud- before deciding what to buy. As befits as a community where looks mattered, there was also a streamline menu for patrons on diets. For those who desired privacy, there were private suites where guests sipped champagne or martinis and personal shoppers attended their every wish. Bullock’s was damaged during the LA riots in 1992 and closed its doors the following year as fans fought to keep dishes and cutlery as souvenirs. This elegant building is now owned by Southwestern Law School which has beautifully preserved the decor of Bullocks Tea Room and turned it into a study hall. The law school opens the tea room once a year to the public.
