This jolly waiter wearing dinner suit and spats at the Gardiner Tavern, Oregon, was created by cartoonist Murray Wade, who was born in 1876. An editorial cartoonist for newspapers in Portland and San Francisco, Wade’s most popular work was a series of caricatures of Oregon legislators. He also worked for Variety magazine.

The three story Gardiner Tavern stood on the north bank of the Umpqua river, the principal river of the Oregon coast, and was popular with sports enthusiasts. There was salmon and trout fishing nearby on the Smith river and hunting of ducks, deer and bear.

The proprietor Olive G Lee wrote: “Gardiner Tavern takes pride in refreshing the inner man, resting the body and returning you to your work younger in years and in spirits.” The Gardiner Tavern burnt down in 1944.
