Product Description

The Virgin Isle Hotel was built in 1950 as the first luxurious resort-type hotel on the island of St Thomas in the Caribbean. Tourists loved the position on a mountain top overlooking the town of Charlotte Amalie and the harbor.

They also loved the facilities, which included a saltwater swimming pool, tennis court and shopping arcade. There were multiple restaurants as well as the Frangi Pani nightclub and the Foolish Virgin Bar.

This amusing illustration of exotic mermaids at play, holding giant pearls, was the front cover of the bar menu at the Hilton-owned property. It was probably drawn by a local artist – it is signed Arnold – but we can’t find anything further about him.

The Virgin Isle hotel propelled St Thomas into the tourism and closed in 1974, according to the New York Times.

The property is now being redeveloped for housing by the island’s government.
