The Anchor Line carried cargo, mail and passengers on the transatlantic route at the turn of the 19th century and passengers spent their time eating and drinking in the saloon, the smoking rooms or state rooms. A quart of Roederer champagne was eight shillings and a glass of sarsaparilla cost sixpence. Lights out by 11pm and all accounts had to be settled before passengers left the ship.
