This cheerful little skunk, whistling as he goes about his daily business, was on the front cover of the menu of The Skunk Diner in Lafayette, Louisiana, in 1956.

Not only was he on the front cover but there was also a drink named for him – the Special Skunk Drink which cost 30c. There’s no indication of what the drink was made of or what it tasted like. Obviously, it was a joke – it was probably delicious.

The Skunk was a drive-in burger joint popular with local high school kids and was situated near to the Pinhope Bridge.

There was a soda fountain, meals such as broiled red snapper and stuffed shrimp and the drinks of choice (other than the Skunk Drink) were milk, Coke, or beer.

The Skunk also made and sold its own pralines, traditional buttery candied pecans, and shipped them across the United States.

The diner’s motto was Don’t be a stinker – stop at The Skunk.
